Chers amis,
Beware! You are going to hear some French. We are at the French Embassy. No, it is going to be a mix of good French and bad English. But you'll hear some French for sure.
I am really pleased to welcome you to the French Residence in Pretoria for this very first "France Alumni Day" in South Africa. I understand this was a busy day, I hope it was a pleasant one as well.
Today, we celebrate the exceptional diversity of the South-African talents trained in France and their roles in strengthening our friendship and long-standing partnership with South Africa.
Dear Alumni, you have to raise your hand so I know who is who. You are quite a few... great! Good. I am delighted and humbled that so many of you have come here to this event. That is why I wanted to check that you were quite a few, otherwise my sentence would have no meaning whatsoever. You should come to the front, by the way.
I welcome you here and I would like to thank you for having chosen France and I would like also to recognise your academic achievements. Please, go on. Un grand merci, un grand bravo à tous, un grand merci de continuer votre chemin avec notre pays.
I also would like to thank our two young alumni speakers, good French speakers by the way, Koketso and Kgomotso if I'm not mistaken. Thank you for making the effort to speak some French, but you had above all a really moving, powerful, impactful and strong testimony. Choisir le français, ce n'est pas seulement choisir une langue, c'est choisir le monde.
You, and all our alumni, are a role model, role models, because there are two of you, who will inspire younger generations of South African students to choose France, to come to France, to not only enjoy good food and all the beauties of France, but to pursue their studies, fulfil their aspirations and contribute to the service of their communities, and to participate in enhancing the ties and friendship between our two people.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 20 new awardees of the France-South Africa Scholarship Programme, who are here with us. At least I hope they are with us! Yes, you confirm.
You have been selected among quite a large group of candidates - 1,500 candidates - and you are just 20 with us today, so that process is quite competitive if you judge by the numbers. It tells everything. Donc à vous aussi, à nos deux intervenantes tout à l'heure, mais à vous aussi, un très grand bravo. Just like our two ladies I think they - the 20 selected awardees - deserve a huge round of applause!
Et donc maintenant le plus dur commence, puisque je vais parler en français pour leur dire que maintenant, vous êtes prêts, ils sont prêts. Vous êtes prêts, plongés dans un univers nouveau pour vous qui est une nouvelle culture, un nouveau langage, avec tout ce que cela vous apportera de défis, de joie, et je l'espère d'ouverture au monde.
Et donc je vais continuer en français parce que l'immersion commence maintenant. Quelques conseils : profitez de chaque instant de votre séjour en France. Pour travailler sérieusement, vous êtes là pour travailler sérieusement, mais aussi pour tous les à-côtés qui font qu'on apprend toujours quand on est dans un autre pays, dans une autre culture.
Alors profitez évidemment de vos cours à l'Université, soyez sérieux, soyez attentifs, revenez ici en étant encore plus qualifiés, encore plus compétents, et encore meilleurs dans vos spécialités. Mais s'il vous plaît profitez aussi de tout ce qui fait la richesse et la joie d'une vie d'étudiant : les musées, la lecture, les promenades au bord de la Seine ou ailleurs, la découverte du patrimoine. Et puis bien sûr les heures passées avec les amis que vous vous ferez j'en suis sûre, amis dont je souhaite que vous puissiez les garder tout au long de votre vie, forgez des liens sincères, vous en serez plus riches, vraiment, je le pense.
Alors nous avons en France une belle expression pour désigner cet art de la conversation, on va dire typiquement français, qui reste français même si nous ne parlons plus un très beau et concis français comme au 18ème. On aime toujours parler, pour ne pas dire bavarder, et imaginer, discuter, échanger des points de vue, souvent ne pas être d'accord, progresser puis après aller boire un verre. Et donc on pense, on pense, on imagine, on bâtit, on échafaude. Et en français on a une expression et on dit : refaire le monde. Quand on parle, on discute comme ça, on imagine, on refait le monde.
Et donc, s'il vous plaît, devenez presque français au point de refaire le monde. Et je le dis sérieusement parce qu'au-delà de cette très belle expression - je trouve que c'est une très belle expression - le monde de demain c'est vous qui le ferez. Et notre monde il est imparfait - on ne va pas s'appesantir - mais rendez-le s'il vous plaît meilleur. Faites et refaites le monde, avec vos amis, par votre force, par vous-même, par vos espoirs, par votre engagement, par votre volonté.
Nous mettons en place cette année un tout nouveau programme de mentorat qui est assuré par d'anciens boursiers, et donc avec un passage de témoin qui me semble une très bonne idée. Je remercie aussi les anciens boursiers qui vont vous passer ce témoin.
This being said, it is my honour to take this opportunity to launch the "2024 call for applications" of the France - South Africa Scholarship Programme.
Alumni and students, partners and friends, we count on every one of you to spread the word...And I am told that the platform online for applications starts now, I mean right now.
Dear director general of the Department of Higher Education and Training, Dr Sishi, I would like to express our gratitude to the Department of Higher Education and Training, to the Department of Science and Innovation, National Research Foundation and all the South African stakeholders who participate and serve actively in the Advisory Board of the France - South Africa Scholarship Programme. Merci à tous de votre engagement dans ce programme.
By doing so, we are enhancing our dialogue and making sure that the mobility of young people between our two countries is aligned with our common priorities.
The alumni and the scholarship awardees are spread over an extremely wide range of disciplines. I am going to name just a few to show you that it is really a huge diversity of possibilities. It goes from agriculture, to engineering, to social sciences, to marine and ocean sciences, to palaeontology, évidemement quand on est ici, to public health and radio-astronomy and so many other fields.
So it is quite a short picture of the wide scope of our economic and cultural ties, we want to increase this cooperation and we do pledge our common commitment to face global challenges. We will only succeed together because never forget, ever, ever, that we are on the same boat. Sometime we have a tendency to forget it.
Et voilà ! Je voulais conclure ici en vous remerciant, en vous félicitant, ceux qui ont déjà réussi dans le passé, en accueillant à bras ouverts en France ceux qui vont venir nous rejoindre, et puis j'ai le plaisir particulier maintenant d'assister à la signature de ces deux accords - we have two agreements to sign today - three, even better ! - that will enhance our cooperation in the field of mobility, higher education and vocational training.
Bravo à tous, merci pour ce que vous faites, car aujourd'hui un point d'aboutissement. C'est toujours un plaisir de voir que les choses avancent et à un moment donné doivent être finalisées et devenir choses concrètes. Donc bravo à tous, merci de ça and now let's proceed.
