Messieurs les élus,

Ladies and Gentlemen,
De manière inhabituelle, je commencerai cette brève allocution en anglais pour honorer nos amis anciens combattants britanniques. I will begin with a few sentences in English, as a courtesy to the British Veterans we are welcoming here today.
The Pegasus Bridge memorial is first and foremost dedicated to the memory of those who fought for the freedom of this country and of Europe in 1944; but it is also meant to remind us all of the glory and significance of such a battle. Indeed, fifty-six years after the courageous fight that took place here in Ranville, this memorial bears the double mark of shared wisdom and of high symbolic value.
In the wake of operation Overlord, thousands of men chose to do their duty as soldiers and defenders of liberty; they all knew what perilous events they were facing, and many of them did sacrifice their lives for the sake of their mission.
Among these thousands of men who came from the air, and whose action proved essential for the sake of the amphibious operations of June 6, some landed here, between Bénouville and Ranville, took the Pegasus Bridge, that was to become famous, and held their position for ten weeks, protecting the oriental flank of the D-Day operations.
It was only another bridge, another airborne operation, among the numerous and frantic actions of these first day of June 1944; but this victory was as essential as any other for the liberation of France. Moreover, if Ranville epitomises the importance of every single battlefought by the Allies in the district of Calvados, it is also the home of the first liberated French house.
Thus, as we remind ourselves together of the heroism of the men of the sixth airborne division, it is the memory of all Norwegian, Belgian, Canadian, British, French and American soldiers who fought the battle of Normandy that is awoken in us. Today, we want to salute their courage and sacrifice.
This memory must live on and be transmitted to future generations; and this memorial will testify of the importance of fighting for peace and freedom. This is the very base of our "Duty of Remembrance", and the reason behind the efforts of those who worked for the preservation of this memorial.
I will now say a few words in French, in gratitude for all those who were involved in this project.
Je tiens à témoigner toute ma gratitude et ma satisfaction à tous ceux qui ont permis la restauration de Pegasus Bridge. Convaincus du bien-fondé de l'exemple que représente le service des valeurs fondamentales qui sont les nôtres, ces hommes et ces femmes de tous horizons et de toutes nationalités ont agi pour que le sacrifice de nos vétérans soit toujours honoré, consacrant par là-même l'universalité des valeurs défendues.
Je veux ainsi rendre un hommage particulier à Monsieur Triboulet, qui était sous-préfet de Bayeux en 1944, avant de servir la République au Parlement et au gouvernement, et qui a présidé le Comité du Débarquement jusqu'en 1999. C'est sous sa présidence, en 1997, que le Comité entreprit la construction du musée de Bénouville, et eut une action déterminante pour la reconstruction du pont de Pegasus. Son action à la tête du Comité a ensuite été relayée par l'Amiral Brac de la Perrière, qui a mené à bien ce projet.
Tant d'autres ont contribué à ce projet, et méritent d'être salués aujourd'hui : je pense bien sûr aux membres et contributeurs privés de l'association de sauvegarde du pont, au conseil régional, et à l'Union Européenne; à nos alliés aussi, en particulier au gouvernement britannique, et à l'association britannique Airborne Assault Normandy Trust. A cet égard, Davis Crossland, fils de l'un des héros de l'opération menée sur Pegasus Bridge, a joué un rôle déterminant, et que je veux spécialement saluer. De nombreuses autres entreprises, que je ne peux toutes saluer ici, ont offert leurs prestations, permettant la réussite de ce projet. Autant d'acteurs importants sans lesquels nous ne serions pas ici aujourd'hui.
La construction de ce mémorial est une victoire; une victoire de la mémoire collective des peuples d'Europe, en faveur de la paix, dans le souvenir et le recueillement que nous inspire l'histoire des hommes qui se sont battus.
Le mémorial de Pegasus Bridge jouera, j'en suis sûr, un rôle de premier plan dans la préservation de notre mémoire collective, et pour la transmission de nos valeurs aux générations présentes et futures, à ceux qui garderont l'Europe unie et en paix.
